A WiFi hotspot is a device that allows you to connect your enabled devices (e.g. laptop, smartphones, tablets, etc.) to the internet. The hotspot is portable so you can connect your device almost wherever you go. Check out a mobile hotspot with your library card.

Chromebooks are secure, compact, simplified laptops that, when connected to the internet, give users the ability to complete a variety of tasks – job applications, schoolwork, or browsing the web.

Chromebooks and mobile hotspots are filtered to comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.  Devices should work with the libraries streaming services including Hoopla, Freegal, The Shelf and Kanopy.  The purpose of mobile hotspots is to provide educational and workforce access to our customers. Mobile hotspots may not work for all entertainment purposes. 

What if the mobile network signal doesn’t reach the area where I want to use a device?2024-08-07T15:06:11-04:00

Chromebooks work with any internet connection. 

The hotspots are location-dependent and will only work if the network’s signal reaches the area. We can make no guarantees of connectivity. You may wish to consult the network coverage map, but please note that the coverage map does not guarantee coverage. Other factors limit a connection in certain areas that would appear to have coverage based on the map.

Are there overdue fines?2024-08-07T15:14:08-04:00

Calvert Library is fine free and there are no overdue fines for these items. 

If an item is overdue, the device will be suspended and it will not work until it is returned and able to be reactivated. 

If a device is more than 45 days overdue, your account will be billed for the replacement cost of the item.

Library hotspots provide unlimited data on the T-Mobile network.T-Mobile may slow, suspend, terminate, or restrict data. If the device is overdue from the library, then the data will be turned off. 

Chromebooks do not have data limits and will continue to work so long as the device is connected to a working network. If the device is overdue from the library, then the device will be disabled. 

How long is the checkout period?2024-08-07T15:15:46-04:00

The checkout period is 21 days. Devices are eligible for automatic renewal.

What do I need to check out a device?2024-08-07T15:16:45-04:00

You need a library card in good standing. Customers may not checkout Chromebook or Chromebook, Mobile Hotspots, or Chromebook/Hotspot bundles on a Kids (CRAB) Card. 

There is a limit of one hotspot and one Chromebook per library card.
