In 1968, the State of Maryland established the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in downtown Baltimore. As a network library of the National Library Service, LBPH patrons can access reading materials, an assistive technology lab, magnification and stability tools, and over 20 staff members dedicated to the library’s community. LBPH is a division of the Maryland State Library.
What Services Does LBPH Offer?
Registered LBPH patrons of all ages can borrow the following materials for FREE:
- High-quality audio books and easy-to-use players
- Easy access to books through Braille and Audio Recording Download Service
- Large print books
- Braille books and magazines
- Descriptive video
Additionally, patrons can request sheet music, and magazines directly from the National Library Service sent in either digital or Braille formats.
All circulating items are sent through the U.S. Postal Service and paid for by the National Library Service.
Who is Eligible?
Any resident of Maryland who is unable to read or use standard print materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical disability may receive service through LBPH. This includes the following people:
- Blind Individuals whose visual acuity is less than 20/200
- Low Visual Individuals
- Individuals with Physical Limitations
- Individuals with Organic Reading Limitations
How do I sign-up?
To sign-up for this service, you will need to complete an application. Applications can be obtained online, by calling the library directly or by contacting your local public library. Once the application is received, it takes just a week or two before your welcome packet arrives.
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday thru Thursday,
10:00am- 2:00pm on the second Saturday of each month.
