Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a materials tracking technology that will speed up customer transactions, make materials handling more efficient and simplify library inventory control. As part of the RFID project, all library materials will have small tags applied. These devices contain a chip storing the item’s identifying information and a transmitter for sending signals. Separate equipment, or readers, are linked to the ILS and communicate with the tags. In a process similar to the current bar code system, materials are scanned for check-out and check-in.
